Distributor identification
Find the right route-to-market partner before one stalls growth
We identify, screen and introduce distributors, agents and channel partners across 72 markets, against criteria we agree with you, with sanctions and beneficial-ownership screening built in.
Channel-partner risk has changed
Why This Is Harder Than It Used to Be
Distributor selection in 2026 is far more demanding than it was five years ago. Sanctions screening is now essential, while beneficial-ownership checks have become a standard requirement from boards and audit committees. Logistics disruption has also increased the cost of a poor choice, as an unreliable distributor can stall the entire international business case.
Informal referrals, trade fair contacts and LinkedIn searches are no longer enough. Channel-partner concentration is now a board-level risk. The professional alternative is a structured, evidence-led process with sanctions and beneficial-ownership screening built in.
From criteria to qualified introductions
Structured search for distributors and channel partners
Criteria workshop
We agree product fit, customer segments, geography, exclusivity expectations, commercial model (agent vs distributor vs hybrid), financial thresholds and any existing-portfolio conflicts. Good criteria here prevent shortlist disputes later.
Landscape mapping
Our in-market Copernicus consultants map the partner universe: trade associations, company registries, import records where available, sector directories, and direct on-the-ground knowledge. The map is built locally, not from a desk in London.
Long-list build
We assemble a structured long-list, typically 20–60 candidates depending on how concentrated the market is. Every entry has source attribution and a first-pass commentary from the in-market consultant.
Screening & profiling
We assess each candidate on strategic fit, commercial fit, product portfolio and competitive conflicts, financial snapshot, ownership and beneficial-ownership, sanctions screening, reputation, and contactability. Screening is against your agreed criteria, not ours.
Qualified shortlist & introductions
We deliver a shortlist (typically 5–10 profiled candidates) each with a recommended approach route and, where appropriate, a warm introduction via our in-market consultant. The dossier is the handoff to your commercial team.

What a Shortlist Profile Contains
Inside the Dossier
The shortlist is a working document, not a marketing brochure. Each profile is designed to answer the questions a commercial director actually asks before authorising an approach.
Each shortlist profile typically includes:
- Entity details, ownership structure, and turnover band
- Financial snapshot: filings-based where the jurisdiction allows
- Product and service portfolio, including competitive conflicts
- Ownership and beneficial-ownership (UBO) position
- Customer base and sector strength
- Sanctions screening result
- Commercial-fit commentary from the in-market Copernicus consultant
- Contactability rating and suggested approach route
Three Points of Difference
How We're Different From a Trade-Fair Contact or a Directory
Directories list.
We screen.
(01)
Any directory gives you a list. The work is in ruling candidates in or out against criteria that matter to your business, not in finding more names.
We don't charge
success fees.
(02)
Our incentive is a good shortlist, not a closed partnership deal. Fee-for-service is the only defensible position for channel-partner identification commissioned by a brand owner.
We can screen for sanctions and UBO.
(03)
Sanctions screening and beneficial-ownership checks are standard on every engagement. Most informal introductions cannot offer either, and in 2026 that gap is a board-level problem, not a paperwork one.

What does distributor identification involve?
Distributor identification involves defining the ideal partner profile, researching the distributor landscape, identifying relevant candidates, screening them and producing a prioritised shortlist.
What types of partners can you identify?
Depending on the market and product, we may identify distributors, agents, importers, resellers, channel partners, franchise partners, joint-venture candidates or specialist local representatives.
Do you guarantee that we will appoint a distributor?
No. We identify and engage relevant candidates, but appointment depends on the client’s proposition, pricing, terms, market demand and distributor appetite.
Can you work in markets where we do not speak the local language?
Yes. Local language capability is one of the reasons clients use Copernicus. Local consultants can help with research, communication and interpretation.
How do you define the ideal distributor profile?
We work with the client to agree target sectors, customer base, geographic coverage, product compatibility, technical capability, sales infrastructure, current brand portfolio and commercial expectations.
Do you contact potential distributors?
Where agreed, yes. We can contact potential distributors to test interest, gather feedback and establish whether there may be a basis for further discussion.
How do you assess whether a distributor is suitable?
We look at market reach, reputation, customer access, product fit, existing supplier portfolio, competing lines, technical capability, responsiveness, financial credibility where available and apparent strategic interest.
What do we receive at the end of the project?
Typical outputs include a distributor landscape review, candidate profiles, contact details where available, screening notes, prioritised shortlist and recommended next steps.
Can you help with distributor meetings?
Yes. We can help arrange meetings, prepare briefing notes, support discussion agendas and provide local market context.
Can you help replace an underperforming distributor?
Yes. Distributor replacement projects can assess the current channel, identify alternative partners and support a more structured selection process.
Can distributor search be combined with market research?
Yes. In many cases, a distributor search is more effective when preceded by market research to understand demand, competition, channels and realistic entry routes.
