China, Japan and South Korea consumer research
International-standard research, delivered with in-market teams
Senior in-country moderators. Proprietary offline panels reaching 8.91 million verified respondents. A 3,000+ expert pool. All delivered through the Copernicus UK hub, in English, to Copernicus methodology.
A stronger way to commission North Asia research
Built for briefs where standard panels and surface-level access fall short
North Asia research needs more than standard international fieldwork. Copernicus combines senior in-country moderation, verified China panels, academic-grade access and UK-led project management across China, Japan and South Korea.
Qualitative, quantitative and expert research across CJK
Senior moderators, verified panels and specialist networks
Qualitative
12 full-time researchers and moderators across China, Japan and South Korea. Most have 10+ years' experience. Together they deliver 50+ qualitative studies a year for international research agencies.
Quantitative
CAPI, CATI, online and hybrid fieldwork. National stratified random sampling where the question requires it, including urban and rural China. Sample drawn from our offline-built and SASS panels, programmed and managed on our proprietary platform.
B2B & Expert
Industry practitioners, channel experts, and regulatory-adjacent specialists drawn from our 3,000+ expert pool. Suitable for sector deep-dives, expert elicitation, and policy-sensitive research that closed networks would not reach.

China quantitative research with verified reach
8.91 million respondents across offline-recruited and real-name panels
Most China online panels skew urban and digital-native, with weak demographic verification. Our two panels are built differently, enabling nationally representative quantitative research.
- In-House Offline Panel
3.27m respondents
- SASS Partnership Panel
5.64m respondents
- Built entirely from face-to-face surveys conducted by Copernicus China between 2001 and 2023, 22 years of offline recruitment.
- Operated by SASS’s Public Opinion Research Center and built through public opinion research across urban and rural China.
- Coverage from tier-1 metropolitan markets through tier-5 cities and into rural China. Not just a digital-native urban panel.
- Every panellist is real-name verified, a level of validation rarely available outside academic research in China.
- Rich sampling labels: demographics, geography, household income, category usage, lifestyle. Designed for tightly-targeted sample definitions.
- Copernicus China is the contracted agency responsible for setting up and running the panel platform on behalf of the Academy.
- Verified at point of recruitment. No incentive-driven self-registration.
- Gives commercial research clients access to institutional-grade sampling that few international firms can offer in China.

One region, three very different research markets
How we adapt the method without losing cross-market comparability
Japan
(01)
Japanese qualitative work relies on consensus and indirect communication. Moderation needs patience, careful questions, and suitable group dynamics. Recruitment is rigorous, using local panels and specialist recruiters. Our moderators know when silence indicates data or discomfort.
South Korea
(02)
Korea is the opposite end of the spectrum: fast fieldwork cycles, very high digital-native penetration, and respondents who are comfortable in online qualitative formats. Strong for online communities, video diaries, and rapid trend work, and strong for studies where speed-to-insight matters. Our Korean team designs for this rhythm rather than against it.
On panel scale
(03)
Japan and South Korea do not have the same offline-panel scale as our China operation: the 3.27M and 5.64M figures are China-specific. For quantitative fieldwork in Japan and Korea we partner with vetted local panel providers under our quality and reporting standards, with our team running design, fieldwork management and analysis. Reporting and analytical framework remain consistent across all three markets, so comparative CJK studies read as one piece of work rather than three stitched-together fieldwork notes.

Why does Copernicus treat China, Japan and Korea as a specialist research area?
China, Japan and Korea are sophisticated but very different consumer markets. Language, culture, channels, digital behaviour, brand expectations and purchase motivations vary significantly.
How do you deal with cultural differences in research?
We adapt the wording, recruitment approach, discussion guide and interpretation to the local market. Direct translation is rarely enough; research must reflect local norms and behaviour.
Is this suitable for Western brands considering North Asia?
Yes. The service is particularly useful for companies assessing whether their product, proposition or brand assumptions translate into China, Japan or Korea.
Do you provide local language research?
Yes. Research can be conducted in local language, with findings translated and interpreted commercially for English-speaking client teams.
What types of research can you conduct in China, Japan and Korea?
Projects may include consumer interviews, online surveys, focus groups, product concept testing, competitor review, pricing research, channel research, brand perception work and market-entry assessment.
Can you compare consumer behaviour across China, Japan and Korea?
Yes. We can structure comparative research to identify both common themes and important local differences, helping clients decide whether they need one regional strategy or separate market approaches.
Can you test whether a product or proposition will work locally?
Yes. Research can assess product fit, positioning, packaging, pricing, messaging, likely barriers and preferred purchase channels.
Can you recruit specialist consumer segments?
In many cases, yes. Recruitment feasibility depends on the segment, market, incidence rate, geography and whether the target audience is consumer, professional or trade-based.
Can you support both qualitative and quantitative research?
Yes. Depending on the decision required, we can support qualitative, quantitative or mixed-method research.
What outputs do clients receive?
Outputs typically include findings, interpretation, market implications, recommended next steps and, where relevant, product, positioning, pricing or channel recommendations.
Can you help with Asian market entry beyond research?
Yes. Research can lead into market-entry planning, distributor search, customer engagement, competitor monitoring or local partner identification.
